SECESSION GUARDS

History
[1st] Company A, Capt. W. W. Perryman, 7th SCVI and [2nd] Company F, Capt. W. W. Perryman, 2nd [Palmetto] SCVI according to Kirkland, Local Names for South Carolina Units. The flag was presented to the company in February, 1861 and was painted by Charleston artist, A. Grinevald.

Description/Condition
The netting sewn to the flag at some earlier time makes it difficult to see. The obverse has an appliquéd crescent moon with horns pointed up in the center with a red appliquéd ribbon above with gold lettering “Unaw’d by Power Unappall’d by Fear.” Gold lettering also under the moon “Secession Guards”. The reverse has the state seal with Palmetto and slogans “Parati Animus Obibusque” and “Dum Spiro. Spero. Spes.”  NOTE: It is very difficult to ascertain the true condition of this flag with the netting over it.  Height: 39”  Width: 45”
