MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN - AUGUST 11
Ladies and Gentlemen:
I am honored to announce that the flag of the Pee Dee Rifles/Light Artillery is coming home to SC.  On Friday, Sept.19th, the SC Division SCV Flag Preservation Committee and the SC Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum will unveil the conserved remains of this wonderful banner.  This will take place at the Relic Room during the Speaker's Reception of the SC Civil War Symposium from 6PM-8PM.
The flag will be on display alongside the jacket of 1st Sgt. Joseph W. Brunson, a veteran of this distinguished unit.
The cost of the reception is $7 and includes light refreshments.
Preservation of the flag began in late 2006 as a joint project between the SCDivSCV and the SCCRR&MM.  This is our first flag to be saved, with the long term goal of preserving ALL the Confederate flags currently in possession of the Relic Room.
Please feel free to forward this to anyone that may be interested.
For more information, please contact Allen Roberson at arobers@crr.sc.gov or myself.
With Warmest Regards, I am
Ken Howle, Chairman
SCDivSCV Flag Preservation Committe

A SLIGHT DELAY FOR THE PEE DEE RIFLES FLAG
Textile Preservation Associates moved to a new location (from Sharpsburg, MD, across the border to WV) and that has delayed completion of the Pee Dee Rifles flag.  That has delayed the final encapsulation part of the treatment, which was to be completed around June 30th to the end of August.  Although it's not guarenteed, if framing is decided upon and have the flag returned by the middle of September, there may be an "unveiling" on Sept. 19 during the 11th annual Civil War Symposium reception.  Keep checking back for updates.

URGENT REPORT:  PEE DEE RIFLES FLAG COMING HOME!
The first flag being preserved due to the efforts of the SC Division's flag preservation project is about to be completed!  The Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum was contacted by Textile Preservation Associates and informed that the Pee Dee Rifles flag will be ready to display on June 30, 2008.  Now the Division must consider framing options.  This is important and welcome news that demonstrates without question the success of the flag preservation project!

DIVISION INITIATES FUNDRAISER

The SC Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans has begun a fundraiser to help support the Flag Preservation Project.  It is the sale of the long awaited book DARK HOURS by Randolph W. Kirkland, Jr.  Mr. Kirkland is also the noted author of BROKEN FORTUNES, the acclaimed work that set out to identify all South Carolinians who died while in service during the War for Southern Independence.  DARK HOURS is another exhaustive effort to list the names of thousands of natives of the Palmetto State who were imprisoned by the Union during the war.  This is a must-have reference volume for anyone interested in our great state’s history, the War for Southern Independence, or genealogy.

The South Carolina Historical Society—which also published the book—graciously donated 150 copies of the book to the SC Division.  We are now offering them for sale at the fantastic price of $25 each, plus shipping.  As of last count, only about 18 or so copies remain, so hurry if you want one.

To get your copy of DARK HOURS, please contact:
