RICHLAND GUARDS

History
This unit had its start in 1832, year of the Nullification crisis. In the 1850’s there were at least eight units operating in Richland District. For the war, Captain E. F. Bookter commanded the Richland Guards, first as Company I, 2nd SCVI, then Company D, 12th SCVI.  Note: Excellent late Antebellum/early war painted flag.

Description/Condition
Pink wool flag with gold fringe along all four edges and about 6 blue ties along hoist edge. Obverse shows black lettering in center circle with a red painted banner beneath: "Give us a place/in the picture/near the flashing/of the guns./Richland Guards./1832." Reverse - shows painted palmetto tree with a crescent moon on the left and a star on the right. "1776" is written beneath the crescent; "1860" is written beneath the star, representing two important dates in SC history.  Height: 33"  Width: 42"

FABRIC
Discoloration/Stains: Darkening of pink fabric, dark stains across the top edge.
Surface Grime: Lightly soiled throughout.
Creases: Minor creasing throughout.
Holes: Small moth holes throughout; 2 holes on the lower right corner of the obverse side. Two large holes top and center; top corner of fly edge is lost due to hole.
Weak Seams: Throughout, especially along fringe border.
Insect Damage: Small moth holes throughout.
Comments: Suggest storing flat, not rolled, to prevent more creasing.

Description: Paint/Attachments - fringe.
Discoloration: Darkening of fringe.
Surface Grime: Lightly soiled throughout.
Creases: Minor creasing throughout.
Missing Elements: Fringe missing top corner fly edge.
Weak Seams: Throughout; especially along fringe border.
Other: Fringe border detached top corner hoist edge, and bottom corner fly edge.
