1905 RETURN CAPTURE #32
History
Flag was returned in 1905 to SC. Battle flag. “Taken at Battle of Malvern near James River, Va July 1st 1862 by Butterfield’s Brigade.” Inscribed by Sgt W. J. Whittick, 83 Penn Vol is this, “Taken from a South Carolina Regt who piled up their dead to resist the attack of the Brigade.” Students of flags maintain that this flag was actually taken from the 3rd Alabama regiment who faced the 83rd Penn Vols [see Echoes of Glory, Arms and Equipment of the Confederacy, p. 247, center flag at bottom]. Note: However, here we have this sad and wonderful statement to Southern defiance inked upon the flag hoist.
